Three Rules of Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most talked about diseases across the world and is a very serious lifelong health problem. Millions of people all over the world are being told that diabetes is “genetic” and that they have to live with it the rest of their life. The current expenditure on diabetes treatment in India is approximately Rs. 6,000/- person/annum. We have a very casual approach to diabetes and it can cause significant damage by the time it is diagnosed. If diabetes is poorly controlled or left untreated, it may lead to blindness, kidney disease, blood vessel damage, infection, heart disease, nerve damage, high blood pressure, stroke, limb amputation. Diabetes is commonly known as the silent killer and in many cases is diagnosed accidentally.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas is no longer able to make insulin, or when the body cannot make good use of the insulin it produces.

Blood glucose is the main source of energy and comes from the food we eat. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps glucose from food to get into our cells to be used for energy. Sometimes our body doesn’t make enough—or any—insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach our cells.

The most common types of diabetes are type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes – The body does not make insulin. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1, usually diagnosed in children and young adults. People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin every day to stay alive.

Type 2 diabetes- The body does not make or use insulin well. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes. Type II diabetes is a very complex metabolic disease.

Gestational Diabetes – Affects females during pregnancy.

The risk factors for type 1 diabetes are still being researched. Several risk factors have been associated with type 2 diabetes and includes-….. (Graphics). The incidence of diabetes is increasing in urban as well as rural areas. This could be due to increasing mechanization, leading sedentary lives and shift of eating habits.

Obesity in children is on the rise. Is there a way out?

Healthy alternatives to fast food should be opted for. Healthy eating habits should be inculcated right from early childhood.

Biggest challenge to a person with diabetes in India?

Lack of awareness about diabetes and its complications, delayed diagnosis, myths surrounding diabetes management makes diabetes detection and management difficult. Integration of physical, emotional and spiritual elements creates wellness. This holistic approach to medicine along with better education, empowers a patient and makes healing a shared responsibility.

Symptoms of Diabetes- It is possible to have diabetes with only very mild symptoms or without developing any symptoms at all. It is important to see a doctor if there is any suspicion of diabetes The most common symptoms are-

Frequent urination- When there is too much glucose in your blood you will urinate more often.

Disproportionate thirst- If you are urinating more than usual, you will need to replace that lost liquid.

Intense hunger- As the insulin in your blood is not working properly, your body may react by trying to find more energy. You will become hungry.

Unusual weight loss- This is more common among people with Diabetes Type 1.

Increased fatigue- As glucose will not be entering your cells and providing them with energy. This will make you feel tired and listless.

Irritability can be due to your lack of energy.

Blurred vision- This affects your eyes’ ability to focus. With proper treatment this can be treated.

Cuts and bruises don’t heal properly or quickly

More skin infections

Itchy skin

Gums are red or swollen

Numbness or tingling, especially in your feet and hands

Natural Remedies to control

If you’re suffering from diabetes, then it’s extremely important to keep a strict watch on your diet. Taking a short walk after meals, can help people with Type 2 diabetes reduce their blood sugar levels. One should adhere to the following to beat the risk of developing diabetes –

  1. Balanced Diet- Natural uncooked food is the best medicine. Food such as sprouts, fruits, juices, nuts and so on can be taken raw. Eating a diet rich in fibre helps the body to absorb sugars slowly, which in turn keeps blood sugar levels balanced. Whole grain crackers – made of cracked wheat, quinoa, rye, oats are healthy. Egg whites can be safely included in a diabetic patient’s diet plan
  2. Exercise : has the potential to control the diabetes by nonmedical means. It reduces the severity of the disease and significantly reduces the risk of long-term complications.
  3. Meditation : Meditation lowers the insulin resistance in our body.
  4. Basil leaves : contain antioxidants which have power to lower blood sugar levels.
  5. Drinking Cactus juice, Green Tea, Cinnamon Water, Consuming flax seed, Isabgol lowers blood sugar level.
  6. Jamun seeds are very helpful in controlling sugar and help to ease from Diabetic symptoms.
  7. Karela or Bitter Gourd is useful in reducing blood sugar.
  8. For diabetic treatment, tender shoot of neem is also used.

Three rules that you should always keep in mind. Firstly, diabetes should be seriously managed throughout the lifetime. Secondly, for prevention the focus should be on a healthy diet and regular exercise. And lastly, early diagnosis is the key to effective management and prevention of complications.

Life has made us quick Learners

Life has made us quick learners. We have been approaching life all wrong, and there is a vast amount of space for improvement. We sometimes tend to learn the wrong things as accepted practice. You’ll soon realize after after watching the video that there are many things we been doing wrong without knowing. Here are some of the things that you might have been doing wrong all your life.

Now lets sit back and know the right way to do things-

  1. You’re supposed to pull the sides of the juice box out so that your kids can hold onto them and keep the juice from spilling
  2. Earphones should be worn by coiling them over the ear. Yep, even I didn’t know this. Not only will it be more comfortable to wear, it will also make sure it doesn’t slip out.
  3. Charging your phone…. Overcharging your battery wears it out. Smartphone are also stressed. Overcharging keeps battery in highly stressed state.
  4. The best way to peel bananas – so you don’t damage the fruits from the bottom up.
  5. The hair pins should be worn with the wavy side facing down.
  6. Holding your stering wheel…. Most of the driving schools tell us to hold at 2’o clock position. This is wrong. Holding at 3’0 clock position is the right way.
  7. The right way to cut a mango is this…… This is probably the most hassle-free way to eat a mango. No wonder we have been making a mess every time we get mangoes in the house.
  8. You’re supposed to use only a dab of toothpaste, and you’re not supposed to rinse your mouth with water afterwards.
  9. Drinking a coke. Put a straw through the hole in the pull-tab of the can, and your coke will no longer leak out over the top.
  10. How to use your phone safely. … this puts load on spine…. This is perfect….. Looking after your vision…. Right distance. Avoiding tired fingers…. The right way.
  11. How to make a perfect round egg… This was a complete game-changer for me. Cut an onion ring, place it in the middle of the pan before cracking open the egg. This way the egg won’t dance around on the pan and give you a headache. That delicious egg will perfectly shaped for you to devour.
  12. The right way of holding a burger.
  13. Using Deo’s and Perspirant in the morning is not a good idea. Use it before going to bed. Its most effective that way.
  14. To refrigerate a drink quickly, wrap it up in a damp paper towel and put it in the refrigerator. It’ll be nice and cool in just 15 minutes!
  15. Though it hurts me to say this, but this is the right way of eating cupcakes:
  16. A glass of wine needs to be held by pinching the stem with your forefinger and thumb. Not by wrapping your hand around it.
  17. A pen should never be held from the top or gripped too tight.
  18. The right way to eat a pizza. A pizza should always be held by folding it a little to make a U-shape so as to prevent it from flopping over. Try now, thank later.
  19. The right way of pouring the juice in a glass.
  20. An apple should be eaten top to bottom not by biting into its side.
  21. While doing push-ups, the body should be kept straight and pressure should be exerted upon the abs and arms.

  23. While doing squats, you need to bend until your thighs are parallel to the ground.
  24. The correct way to put on nail paint.
  25. Moisturiser is not supposed to be rubbed into your skin but just slightly tapped.
  26. While tying your shoelaces, the bow must rest horizontally, else you risk them getting untied quickly.
  27. Potatoes can be peeled without a peeler. Simply dunk them in boiling water until tender, then in ice cold water and pull the skin away.
  28. You should never try to clean a blender by scrubbing it. Instead just add some dishwashing liquid and water, and blend it.
  29. The long necks of beer bottles are meant to be used to hold onto them. That way you get a good grip on your beer and avoid heating it up with your hand.
  30. You have been wearing your earrings wrong all your life!….. Yes! All these years of flaunting the prettiest earrings, but did you ever realize that you are actually supposed to take the plastic part off? You are most welcome!
